About the Farm

Background

Aries Crossing Sheepherding began with a small but growing flock of East Friesian sheep. The farm has expanded its offerings to include a Shepherd's CSA with five different options. They are working towards building a dairy to produce artisan cheese and gelato, and they also offer fiber products like yarn and rugs.

Practices

The flock grazes on lush green pastures throughout the summer, supplemented minimally with local all-natural hay and spent brewer's grain from a local brewery. The farm employs sheep as natural mowers in vineyards, reducing the need for tractors, human labor, and herbicides. This method also provides natural fertilizer and irrigation, showcasing a symbiotic relationship with the land. The electric fencing used for the sheep runs on a solar charger, emphasizing a low-impact approach to farming.

The Rest

The farm's sheep are utilized in a local vineyard, where they help manage undergrowth and contribute to the vineyard's ecosystem. The shearing process is a community effort, with a mother-daughter team shearing and trimming the hooves of the flock. The wool is then processed with the help of friends. The farm's sheep are housed at three separate locations in town, each serving different groups within the flock.
