About the Farm
Background
Located in Livonia, Michigan, AquaGrowers stands as the first commercial aquaponic facility in the Superior State. Situated in the Metropolitan Detroit Area, this urban farm has carved out a niche by growing a variety of produce year-round within its indoor facility.
Practices
AquaGrowers employs a symbiotic system where tilapia fertilize hydroponically-grown plants. The farm grows a wide range of leafy herbs and greens, including various basils, oregano, thyme, parsley, chard, pok-choy, lettuce, beet, collards, kale, and chives. Experimentation with fruiting and flowering crops such as hot peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, squash, and okra is ongoing. No pesticides or chemical fertilizers are used; instead, seedlings are fertilized with OMRI certified, vegan fertilizer. Pest control is managed through plant extracts, oils, and beneficial insects. The tilapia are never treated with testosterone.
The Rest
AquaGrowers is continually exploring new and exciting plants to meet niche market demands, ensuring a diverse and dynamic range of produce.
