About the Farm

Background

Located on a historic farm property known as Rural Shades in Charles City County, Virginia, the farm dates back to the 17th Century and was originally owned by the Lamb family. Amy’s Garden began in 1995 as an ambitious backyard garden and quickly blossomed into a full-time farming career for Amy Hicks and George Ferguson. The farm has been Certified Organic since 2000 and is known for its diverse selection of specialty vegetables, small fruits, and cut flowers.

Practices

The farm never uses herbicides, harmful pesticides, or synthetic fertilizers. Instead, they focus on nurturing soil health through compost, organic mulches, and crop rotation. Cover crops are planted to fix nitrogen, add organic matter, and provide habitat for beneficial insects and wildlife while preventing erosion. Permanent plantings of flowering plants support insects and wildlife, including native milkweed for migrating monarch butterflies. These practices are guided by the principles of organic regenerative agriculture.

The Rest

Amy’s Garden direct markets their produce and flowers at local farmers markets in Richmond and Williamsburg and offers the only Certified Organic CSA option in the area. The farm welcomes inquiries from individuals interested in working on the farm or helping at farmers markets.
