About the Farm

Background

Double Oak was initiated by the American Chestnut Land Trust as part of their mission to connect people to the land. The Trust, known for preserving and managing over 3000 acres and 15 miles of trails in Calvert County, MD, aimed to return fields formerly used for tobacco production to agricultural use. The farm is operated by ACLT volunteers, work share participants in the CSA, and paid interns.

Practices

The farm employs organic practices, though it is not certified. Emphasis is placed on sustainable land use and community involvement, with volunteers and interns playing a significant role in daily operations. The focus is on growing a variety of vegetables for a 26-week season, ensuring that the land is treated with care and respect.

The Rest

Double Oak provides shares of vegetables to CSA members, sells produce to local restaurants interested in locally grown food, and makes weekly donations to two shelters. For information on the availability and cost of shares, interested parties are encouraged to contact the American Chestnut Land Trust.
