About the Farm
Background
Founded on March 1, 1982, by Mary Ann Ihm, the organization began in Milwaukee and moved to its current country location in Newburg, WI, in 1988. It has the longest-running CSA in Wisconsin and has been offering diverse public programs since its inception. In 2022, 28 of its 33 acres were turned into a nature conservancy, and the CSA farm was handed over to Caleb Trainor, operating under the name Winterspring CSA.
Practices
The farm is certified organic and focuses on holistic education, teaching people to grow, prepare, and eat healthy food. It emphasizes harmony with the earth, incorporating practices like permaculture and organic farming. The grounds include gardens, nature trails, woods, meadows, ponds, prairies, and an outdoor labyrinth, fostering biodiversity with over 85 species of birds and other wildlife.
The Rest
The center offers a variety of workshops in gardening, herbalism, cooking, ecology, foraging, crafts, fruit tree care, and personal growth. Signature annual events include the Spring Seedling Sale, Mud and Suds Party, Taste of Wellspring farm-to-table dinner, and AgriCULTURE fest. The property is now branded as Riveredge Nature Center Wellspring Campus, and the organization continues to support the incubator farm Winterspring CSA.
