About the Farm
Background
The farm has been certified organic by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) and is known for its commitment to organic farming practices and wildlife conservation.
Practices
No genetically modified crops are grown, and no synthetic chemicals are used. Cover crops are planted on fallow ground for soil health, supplemented with compost on crop ground. The farm uses deep well irrigation and trickle irrigation to conserve water, focusing it on crop rows. Physical controls like bird-netting, re-usable weed fabric, and row covers are preferred over organically approved herbicides and pesticides, which are used sparingly. Acres of uncultivated ground serve as a sanctuary for ground-nesting birds and other wildlife.
The Rest
The farm encourages wildlife by maintaining uncultivated areas and using practices that support beneficial insect populations and native ecosystems.
