About

Facts
Founded 2009
Background

In 2009, the future home of the farm was a small, neglected rectangle of land with ill-placed trees, aging fence posts, and stretches of Bermuda grass and foxtails. Years of suburban-style landscaping had eroded the topsoil, creating a patchwork quilt of exposed clay pan. Since then, the farm has dedicated itself to the thoughtful stewardship of the land, transforming it into a thriving ecosystem.

Practices

The farm replaces pesticides with natural predators and hand-cultivation, resulting in evening choruses of frogs and daily visits from bees and butterflies. Herbicides are avoided with the aid of livestock, such as bunnies and geese, and through non-polluting practices like sheet-mulching and occultation. The farm prioritizes encouraging and preserving biodiversity, finding great value in using native plants to support a healthy ecosystem.

Of note

The farm is an open door, open source project merging responsible semi-urban agriculture with found resource re-purposing. They offer workshops and farm tours, and emphasize the importance of local food, community support, and sustainable living. Their guiding principle is 'Live well. Waste not.'
