About the Farm
Background
A few years ago, Ron and Sharon Konkoly decided to downsize and pursue a new venture for their retirement. After seeing a TV commercial for alpacas, they visited several alpaca farms in Ohio, which has the most alpaca farms in the U.S. In 2003, they moved to a 5-acre farm, bought a few alpacas, and have since had as many as 15 alpacas. As of December 1, 2011, they have 6 alpacas, all registered and born in the U.S. Their alpacas have won ribbons in show rings and fleece competitions, and all are for sale on their website.
Practices
From Spring to Fall, the alpacas graze on rich green pastures, supplemented with hay and grain. During the winter months, they receive more hay and additional grain. The farm processes its own alpaca fleece, which is skirted, washed, and carded on a Luet Drum Carder in a smoke-free setting. The fiber batts are custom-made to specifications and can be blended with silk, wool, or sparkle fiber. The farm also offers felting classes and personal lessons.
The Rest
The farm sells a variety of alpaca fiber products, including raw fiber, processed batts, mill-spun gloves, hats, socks, mittens, and the famous ALPACA SOX. They also offer pacapoo and alpaca mulch, which is used as a moisture retainer and plant feeder. Families, friends, and groups are welcome to visit, with Spring, Summer, and Fall being the best times. The farm also provides simple dyeing techniques using Wilton Icing Dye.
