About the Farm
Background
The Southwood Farm & Market began its development on an 80-acre agricultural property along the Polecat Creek, just east of Elm Street, with plans to open to the public in phases starting in late 2012. The project aims to reconnect people with the land and provide a hands-on agricultural experience for the local community, particularly those in Tulsa, just 20 minutes away from downtown. Partnerships with local organizations, including the City of Jenks, Oklahoma State University, Jenks High School Future Farmers of America, Tulsa County Extension Master Gardeners, Oklahoma Farm & Food Alliance, and the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, have been integral to the planning and building of this venture.
Practices
The farm's philosophy centers on the belief in the need to rediscover our connection to the land that sustains us. This guiding principle influences their sustainable farming methods and educational initiatives, aimed at fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of agriculture among the community.
The Rest
Southwood Farm & Market is designed to be a community hub, offering educational opportunities and fostering partnerships with local schools and agricultural organizations. The farm's proximity to downtown Tulsa makes it an accessible destination for those looking to engage with sustainable agriculture and community-driven farming practices.
