About the Farm
Background
High Mowing Organic Seeds began in 1996 with just 28 varieties, many of which originated in founder Tom Stearns’ backyard. Since then, the company has grown exponentially, transforming from a one-man operation into a thriving business offering over 600 heirloom, open-pollinated, and hybrid varieties of vegetable, fruit, herb, and flower seeds. True to its roots, the company continues to source many of its varieties directly from independent, passionate organic seed farmers, including from the 40-acre working farm owned and operated by Tom Stearns in northern Vermont.
Practices
High Mowing Organic Seeds is committed to re-imagining food systems to support health on all levels—environments, economies, communities, and bodies. The company produces, develops, and sells only the best quality organic seeds, selected for their exceptional performance in organic conditions. They have established partnerships with other farmers and wholesale seed companies to expand the selection and availability of organic seeds. The company has implemented the highest quality standards for seed testing, invested in an on-site lab and Quality Control department, and purchased state-of-the-art seed cleaning and sorting equipment. Additionally, they have created a trials and breeding program to assess and develop varieties that thrive in organic conditions.
The Rest
High Mowing Organic Seeds ships year-round within 2 to 5 business days and offers a knowledgeable customer service team, many of whom are or were farmers, to assist with customer questions. The story behind the company's name reflects the historical practice of naming hayfields, or 'mowings,' based on their location in northern New England.
