About the Farm
Background
With 40 years of rich farming experience and 32 years certified organic, Grindstone Farm has become a well-known leader in Central and Northern New York for producing high-quality, certified organic fruits and vegetables. Dick de Graff, raised on a 1,000-acre farm, initially resisted farming but was eventually drawn back to the land. In 1981, he bought his first 150-acre plot and began the transition to organic farming in 1985. By 1988, Grindstone Farm was one of the earliest farms to be certified organic in New York State. Over the years, the farm has faced numerous challenges, including undercapitalization and fickle markets, but has grown into a well-known farm with a pristine reputation.
Practices
Grindstone Farm is committed to organic farming practices, avoiding chemical inputs and focusing on sustainable agriculture. The farm's transition to organic began in 1985, and it received organic certification from NOFA-NY in 1988. The farm's practices include growing a variety of fruits and vegetables, raising livestock, and serving as a food hub for over 30 New York organic farmers. The farm also manufactures root crop washers and hosts educational opportunities for farmhands to learn organic practices.
The Rest
Grindstone Farm offers a variety of services, including home delivery, group site delivery, and on-farm pick-up. The farm hosts an on-farm market every Friday and has provided organic products to a major food Co-Op in New York City for many decades. Additionally, the farm features an Airbnb cabin, hosts Farm-To-Table dinners and events at its pondside pavilion, and has partnered with Off The Muck for product ordering and delivery. The farm's Best Box program and subscription service offer convenient drop points and home delivery.
