About the Farm
Background
The history of the farm dates back to 1943 when Gilbert Griggs moved to Billerica from Georgetown, Massachusetts. Initially a chicken farm and apple orchard, it transitioned to focus on fruits and vegetables in 1955. Gilbert's son Billy, who studied horticulture, joined the farm after college and built the first greenhouse in 1981, eventually expanding to 14 greenhouses by 1992. Gilbert and Billy ran the business together until Gilbert's passing in 2006. Today, Billy continues the family legacy, maintaining a 53-acre farm that has become a local favorite for plants and produce.
Practices
The farm grows a variety of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers, both annuals and perennials, on its 54 acres and in 14 greenhouses. They also maintain a 1.5-acre orchard with 8 varieties of apples available in the fall. The farm emphasizes hands-on horticultural expertise, with knowledgeable staff ready to assist customers in planning and maintaining their gardens.
The Rest
From April, the farm sells a wide range of seasonal plants, including annuals, perennials, herbs, and vegetable plants. From July through November, it offers fresh produce, featuring sweet corn and tomatoes. In December, the farm provides a variety of Christmas trees, hand-decorated wreaths, kissing balls, Amaryllis, and Poinsettias. The farm also participates in the Billerica Farmer's Market every Monday and hosts seasonal festivals for both children and adults.
