About the Farm
Background
Founded in 2002 with the help of the Queens Community House, the Forest Hills CSA was later invited to its current home at the Church-in-the-Gardens by the World Service Committee of the Church-in-the-Gardens. The CSA aims to make fresh, seasonal, organic food accessible to all by offering subsidized shares for low and middle-income members, supported by full-share paying members.
Practices
The CSA sources its vegetables from Golden Earthworm Organic Farm in Jamesport, Long Island, which adheres to organic farming principles. Fruit shares come from Briermere Farm, also on the North Fork of Long Island. Additionally, the CSA offers products from the Lewis Waite Farm Network, which includes farms in Northern New York and Southern Vermont. The CSA emphasizes community involvement, requiring all members to volunteer a minimum of six hours per season.
The Rest
Members can periodically order a variety of products including cheeses, yogurt, butter, meats, eggs, grains, beans, flours, bread, jams, maple syrup, and honey. The CSA is entirely volunteer-run and fosters community through shared responsibilities and events. Distribution takes place on Tuesdays from 4 to 8 PM.
