About the Farm

Background

The farm was purchased in 1986 and initially focused on raising buffalo along with a breeding Rocky Mountain Stud and a few mares. Over time, the buffalo herd grew to approximately 15 cow-calf pairs and a breeding bull, and the meat was sold as natural grass-fed, organic, and non-medicated. The farm transitioned to raising yaks after the owners, Colleen and her husband, realized they needed animals that were easier to manage. They purchased their initial yaks from the Rocking Y Ranch in Sun Valley, Idaho, and have since developed a herd that includes all five colors represented in yaks.

Practices

The yaks are naturally pasture-raised on organic fields, with no pesticides, fertilizers, or chemicals used since the farm's purchase. The animals are 100% grass-fed, not given any grain, and are not vaccinated or treated with antibiotics. Pasture rotation is employed for parasite control. The meat is processed at a USDA facility, certified e-coli negative, dry-aged for 10 days, and flash frozen in cryovac packaging to ensure maximum nutrition, flavor, and tenderness.

The Rest

The farm welcomes visitors and provides detailed nutritional facts and pricing on their website. The yaks are known for their calving ease, disease resistance, and personable nature. They can be milked, used as pack animals, and their hair can be sheared for yarn material. The farm's herd includes a rare golden royal bull, one of only about 50 golden yaks in the United States.
