About the Farm
Background
Owned and operated by Janet Aardema and Dan Gagnon, Broadfork Farm is a small family farm in Chesterfield, VA. Janet and Dan both hold Bachelor’s Degrees in Biology and have extensive experience working on farms in the Northwest and Northeast regions of the country. They moved to Chesterfield to be near Janet's extended family and have since been dedicated to growing nutrient-dense food for their community. The farm supports Janet, Dan, and their four children, who are also learning about soil microbiology and the importance of sustainable farming.
Practices
Broadfork Farm uses traditional European methods of biointensive, raised bed production to maximize soil and plant health. They employ ecological methods such as compost, cover crops, organic fertilizer, and minerals to feed the soil. Raised beds prevent soil compaction, allowing for healthier plant roots. The farm uses organic potting soil and fertilizer, along with amendments like fish emulsion and sea minerals. No synthetic/chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides are ever used. The farm is Certified Naturally Grown, adhering to the same standards as Organic Certification, and is a proud member of the Virginia Association for Biological Farming and Slow Food RVA.
The Rest
Broadfork Farm also features a farmstead bakery where naturally leavened, old-world style bread is baked using 100% Certified Organic ingredients in a wood-fired oven. Vegetables and bread can be purchased at various local farmers markets, including Brandermill Green Market and St. Stephens Farmers Market, as well as through Richmond online farmers markets and a self-serve farm stand. The farm offers a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, allowing members to receive a diverse selection of produce from May to November. Broadfork Farm emphasizes the importance of nutrient-dense food grown using methods that mimic nature, benefiting both the community and the environment.
