About the Farm
Background
Founded by Ryan Casey, a first-generation farmer from San Diego, Blue House Farm began in 2005 after Casey completed an internship with the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems at UC Santa Cruz and worked on several farms. The Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) awarded the farm a lease on land in Pescadero, and it has since expanded to include a historic 74-acre ranch in San Gregorio. The farm has grown to provide housing for year-round farmworkers and raised a redwood timber frame barn in 2019, which now serves as the hub for community events and the farmstand.
Practices
Blue House Farm operates in two distinct microclimates, allowing for a wide range of biodiversity. Cool-weather crops thrive in the foggy conditions of the San Gregorio property, while heat-loving crops flourish in the sunny climate of the Pescadero ranch. The farm is certified organic by CCOF and emphasizes the restoration and stewardship of its land in collaboration with POST.
The Rest
Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including a strawberry u-pick and a pumpkin patch, at the San Gregorio ranch from May through October. The farmstand is open every Saturday and Sunday, providing the local community with fresh produce. The farm also engages with the community through various events and offers its organic heirloom beans online.
