About the Event
Wish you had better knowledge of wild plants and how to unlock their potential as medicines?
This class will get you started identifying many of those plants & introduce you to the wonderful world of foraging. You will learn to identify common wild plants and how to prepare them either as tincture, poultice or even additions to the dinner table.
Now, more than ever, it is vital to develop a relationship with the plants growing around us. Natural medicines offer us the opportunity to address personal health issues in a safe, fun way while lowering our dependence on big pharmaceutical companies. For almost every ailment there is undoubtedly a natural medicine growing nearby.
With the price of groceries soaring out of control anything we can do to lower our costs is essential. Many plants grow in such abundance in South Carolina that we can all benefit from their bounty.
Most importantly, natural spaces are in danger of being lost forever. Learning the importance of wild plants inspires foragers to preserve these spaces for generations to come.
We look forward to sharing with you the magic of medicinal plants and getting you started on your journey of wild foraging!
About the Location and Instructor:
"Just Ducky Farm" is a farmstaeding project started about two years ago by Chef Eric van Adema in Sunset, South Carolina. Nestled in Reedy Cover at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We raise chickens, ducks and grow organic vegetables. Our poultry eggs, vegetables, wild mushroom coffee and limited ingredient dog food can be found at local farmers markets. The property offers a diverse variety of wild plants and fungi abundant in upcountry South Carolina.
This property is almost entirely off grid. There is no running water, internet, cell phones, and only basic electric hook ups. As a result of previous work projects there is now:
-natural spring water tapped directly from the source
-outdoor privy made entirely from recycled materials
- solar energy support for electric back up & reduced reliance on the power grid
Class Overview:
- brief discussion of foraging and wild plant preparation
- wilderness walk to identify and gently harvest common wild plants (approximately 2 hours)
- hands on preparation of tinctures to take home with you
- Q&A / open discussion of sustainable practices and future harvests
