Clean your cobwebs this spring with a broom you have made yourself, and be inspired to start planting your own broom corn!
Saturday, April 27, 2 p.m.-4 p.m. during Exchange Place Living History Farm’s 38th Spring Garden Fair: A Cobweb Broom Workshop with master Broom Maker John Alexander! Cost will be only $30, thanks to a grant being shared by Broom Maker John to spread the awareness of this Appalachian craft. All materials will be supplied. Class size is limited, but open to any aged 11 to 111! PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. RESERVE YOUR SPOT BY E-MAILING epfestivals.gf@gmail.com. Information on planting your own broom corn will also be shared!
John first learned broom making while a student at Berea College when he was given his first on-campus job at the broom making shop with Johnny Reed, Berea College's resident broom maker. Over the decades since, he has taught innumerable folks 11 to 90 years of age.
John has enjoyed working with Matthews Living History Farm Museum, and looks forward to doing more with Exchange Place. John can be seen in several videos produced by Matthews Living History Farm Museum at
Along with approximately forty other vendors, John and his wife, Susan, will be demonstrating and selling his handcrafted brooms during the 38th Exchange Place Living History Farm Spring Garden Fair, which will be held Saturday, April 27, 2024 (10 a.m.-5 p.m.), and on Sunday, April 28, 2024 (noon-5 p.m.). The Spring Garden Fair is a celebration that fills the grounds of the historic site with thousands of plants, demonstrations of springtime activities on a 19th century farmstead, the sharing of garden/farming wisdom, handcrafted garden art, and more.
