About Johanna:
Growing up in the beautiful Santa Cruz mountains, Johanna was infused with a love of nature and exploration. Alongside her passion for these things was an equal desire to create Art and music. After earning a degree in Ecology and Art she traveled, adventured, and tried on several different occupations including commercial fishing in Alaska, white water rafting, farming and caretaking for every kind of plant and animal. Currently she works with the Giant Sequoia trees in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
From a young age, Johanna played and studied music through piano, flute, singing and guitar. While living in Santa Cruz, she was invited to open for some wonderful touring Artists including: Pete Bernhard of Devil Makes Three, Mystic Braves, Dawes, Jolie Holland, Horse Feathers, Rhett Miller, The Lowest Pair and Eilen Jewell. Her writing reflects on love, life and adventure and works at capturing the rich emotions that arise from these moments.Johanna’s music moves between a sweet soothing hymn and a passionate pleading for understanding. Whether to call it Rock or Americana depends on the number of band members present and plugged in. She plays solo, or accompanied by another singer and fiddle player.
As Sun Maiden, she plays with a full electric band. She’s been writing music all her life and is currently recording singles and organizing for a second full album. Her first album, Restless Heart was recorded in 2009. Tracks are available on her SoundCloud and will be re-released on her upcoming website.
