About the Farm
Background
Founded on March 1, 1982, by Mary Ann Ihm, Wellspring began as a holistic learning environment in Milwaukee before moving to Newburg, WI in 1988. It established the longest-running CSA in Wisconsin and has offered wellness education, ecology, gardening, arts, and personal growth programs. The farm spans 33 acres with gardens, nature trails, woods, meadows, ponds, prairies, and an outdoor labyrinth. In 2022, Wellspring turned 28 acres into a nature conservancy and sold its buildings and grounds to Riveredge Nature Center in 2023.
Practices
Wellspring raises USDA certified organic produce on 6 acres of organic gardens. The farm emphasizes hands-on learning, inviting community members to work alongside them, attend classes, and learn to make nutritious meals from harvested produce. The CSA program feeds hundreds of families each week during the growing season. The farm's philosophy centers on living in harmony with the earth, promoting sustainable agriculture, and preserving natural habitats.
The Rest
Wellspring offers farm tours, workshops, and learning opportunities for individuals, families, school, and community groups. The property is home to over 85 species of birds and various wildlife, providing a relaxing and rejuvenating environment. Although the hospitality program has been discontinued, the site is now branded as Riveredge Nature Center Wellspring Campus, continuing its mission of environmental education and land stewardship.
