About the Farm

Background

The Tonnemaker family has deep roots in Washington farming, beginning with George and Cora Tonnemaker who planted an orchard in Yakima Valley in 1903. Their son Orland expanded the family's agricultural endeavors, eventually purchasing land in 1962 that would become Tonnemaker Hill Farm. The farm has been passed down through generations, with each adding their own contributions. Kurt Tonnemaker took on the challenge of direct marketing in 1992, opening a fruit stand and later focusing on farmers markets. Today, the farm is operated by Kole Tonnemaker and his family, continuing the tradition of direct sales and organic farming.

Practices

Tonnemaker Family Orchard is committed to organic farming practices, certified organic and dedicated to cultivating a diverse array of crops. They focus on heirloom and specialty varieties, ensuring a rich biodiversity. The farm employs methods that enhance soil health and ecological balance, such as crop rotation and organic pest management. The addition of Tonnemaker Valley Farm has furthered their commitment to creating green spaces and habitats for both humans and wildlife, reclaiming land from invasive species and managing water tables effectively.

The Rest

The farm offers a Subscription Program similar to a CSA, providing weekly produce to subscribers. They sell directly to consumers at their farm stand and through various farmers markets across Washington. Additionally, they supply local restaurants and home canning groups. The farm also features a large selection of u-pick flowers, encouraging visitors to connect with the source of their food.
