About the Farm
Background
The farm, originally known as Kline Kill Organic Gardens, began in 1994 on rented land in Chatham, New York. After five years, the operation moved to its current 200-acre location in Claverack, New York, on land that Chris Cashen's grandparents bought in the 1950s. Chris and Katie Cashen, the first generation to make their living from farming, have grown the business significantly since its inception.
Practices
The farm employs certified organic practices, rotating 60 acres of vegetables within a 100-acre rotation and maintaining 75 acres of pasture for grass-fed beef. The greenhouse is used for growing transplants and bedding plants. Chris Cashen brings a practical and long-term vision for managing the fields, woods, pastures, and waterways, while Katie Cashen's background in Amish agriculture and organic farming informs their holistic approach to farming. The farm is protected by an easement from the Columbia Land Conservancy, ensuring its preservation.
The Rest
The farm markets its produce through a CSA, the Hudson Farmers' Market, and numerous wholesale accounts, allowing for a diverse range of vegetables throughout the season. The family-oriented operation benefits from the support of Chris's parents and siblings, who live on the farm and assist during busy times. The farm also produces maple syrup and maple products. The Cashen family's commitment to local, seasonal eating is a core aspect of their farming philosophy.
