About the Farm
Background
The Saint Joseph's College Student Farm has become a cornerstone of the college's sustainability initiatives, providing a hands-on learning environment for students. Over the years, it has expanded its operations to include a variety of growing methods and has established itself as a reliable source of fresh produce for the community.
Practices
The farm employs organic farming methods, utilizing a seasonal high tunnel, open fields, and a greenhouse equipped with an aquaponics system where yellow perch provide nutrient-rich water for herb cultivation. This integration of diverse growing techniques ensures a continuous supply of fresh produce throughout the year.
The Rest
In addition to selling produce through Community-Supported Agriculture, the Rensselaer Farmers' Market, and on campus, the farm also donates to local food pantries. It serves as an educational platform for students, offering internships, summer employment, and practical experience for those enrolled in sustainability courses.
