About the Farm
Background
Rolling Prairie is the original Midwest vegetable cooperative, established in 1994 by a group of farmers to provide a vegetable subscription service to Lawrence and Kansas City. Over 300 households receive a weekly bag of locally grown produce during the growing season. The cooperative has maintained its commitment to natural, ecologically sustainable, organic practices for over twenty years.
Practices
The majority of the produce is certified organic, though some farmers have chosen to forgo certification in favor of transparency about their growing practices, which are detailed on their website. This approach allows customers to understand the sustainable methods employed. Occasionally, the cooperative offers conventional produce, such as IPM apples, to provide value and variety while supporting the regional food system.
The Rest
The cooperative consists of six growers and operates across four counties in Eastern Kansas, ensuring that local weather events do not disrupt production and delivery. Produce is delivered to four different pick-up sites in Lawrence, Topeka, and Kansas City, offering convenience to customers. The cooperative's geographical spread and diverse strengths among member farms enable them to offer a wide range of produce, from arugula to mushrooms to zucchini.
