About the Farm
Background
Red Planet began in 2004 as a year-round urban farm on Providence's West End. Over the years, it has expanded its offerings and increased its acreage, yet maintained a strong focus on quality and community. Initially independent, the farm has found support within a vibrant local food community, contributing to the struggle for good vegetables grown in Rhode Island dirt.
Practices
Red Planet employs organic farming methods, though it is not certified organic due to a recent relocation. The farm emphasizes conservation and ecological balance, avoiding pesticides and GMO seeds entirely. Their commitment to chemical-free farming ensures that their produce is grown with the utmost respect for the environment.
The Rest
Red Planet offers a 'Main Season' CSA from June through November and a 'Winter/Early Spring' CSA, thanks to their greenhouses. Full shares are priced at $500, while half-shares are $250. They also offer 'work-shares' for those willing to trade farm labor for produce. Beyond the CSA, the farm supplies high-quality produce to local restaurants through the Little City Growers' Co-op and participates in the Armory Park Farmers' Market in Providence every Thursday from June to October.
