About the Farm
Background
The land that is now Oak Hill Farm supported First Nations people before contact, as evidenced by lithic remains found during plowing. In the early 1900s, the land supported dairy cows, and the Red Barn was used for milking. Otto Teller, a key figure in the farm's modern history, moved to the Sonoma Valley in the mid-1950s. He was a passionate advocate for organic farming and land conservation, founding the Sonoma Land Trust and placing Oak Hill Farm in a conservation easement. Initially starting with sheep, Otto shifted to growing floral greens and later added vegetables under the guidance of his wife, Anne Teller. The farm has been managed by several family members over the years and continues to thrive under the leadership of Anne's daughters and granddaughter.
Practices
Oak Hill Farm has been farming in balance with nature since 1965. They grow over two hundred varieties of vegetables, fruit, flowers, perennial greenery, and herbs as they naturally come into season. The farm embraces sustainable agricultural practices, avoiding the use of herbicides and pesticides, and prioritizes water conservation. The land is protected under a conservation easement, ensuring it will never be developed.
The Rest
The Red Barn Store, housed in a 100-year-old dairy barn, is open from April to December, offering a variety of farm products including vegetables, flowers, fruit, and wreaths. Monthly tours are available for visitors interested in learning more about the farm's operations and history.
