About the Farm
Background
Ken and Mary West's journey began in 1985, leading to a partnership with Boo and Jim Smythe in 1988, which birthed the farm. Starting with 5 acres of blueberries, they expanded into strawberries, blackberries, and various vegetables. By 2016, the Smythes handed over the farm to the Wests, who now manage over 50 acres. The farm also saw the addition of a timber frame home built by Ken in 1995 and an outdoor wood furnace in 2014. Emily, their daughter, is now taking on more responsibilities, while their son Ben has pursued a career in IT.
Practices
The farm employs a mix of conventional, organic, no-till, and sustainable agricultural practices. They emphasize biodiversity, ecological balance, natural fertilization, and pest management. Although not certified organic due to the high costs and extensive record-keeping, they use green manures, low-impact pesticides, and limited synthetic fungicides to maintain soil integrity and produce healthy, nutritious products.
The Rest
The farm store offers expanded grocery and natural healing options. Visitors can also find Mt. Olympus produce at several Northern Virginia producer-only farmer’s markets. The farm was recognized as the Conservation Farm of the Year in 2008.
