About the Farm
Background
Founded by (RET) Sgt. Stephanie J. Shannon, Michigan Women Veterans Empowerment began its journey in 2017 with the establishment of its first women veterans garden. The organization is a faith-based 501c3 non-profit dedicated to supporting veterans, service members, and their families, particularly focusing on women veterans who face unique challenges in transitioning to civilian life. Sgt. Shannon, a former homeless service-connected disabled US Army veteran, has over 30 years of experience in various fields and has authored two books, including the Amazon best-seller 'Battling The Storm Within'.
Practices
The organization planted its first garden in 2017, cultivating 72 varieties of organic fruits and vegetables. These crops are harvested and sold at the Genesys Athletic Club Farmers Market, providing both a source of fresh produce and a means of empowerment for women veterans. The garden serves as a therapeutic space and a practical resource for veterans to engage with the land and each other, fostering a sense of community and well-being.
The Rest
Michigan Women Veterans Empowerment focuses on the 8 dimensions of wellness: Emotional, Financial, Environmental, Intellectual, Occupational, Physical, Social, and Spiritual. The organization hosts events, workshops, retreats, and conferences to provide education, advocacy, and support. It also aims to raise awareness about the issues faced by veterans, particularly women, and to offer solutions through high-quality services and resources. Sgt. Shannon, the founder, is also a licensed and ordained Pastor and an inspirational speaker who has been featured in various media outlets.
