About the Farm

Background

Founded in 2009 by a fine furniture craftsman and a technology entrepreneur, the farm was born out of a desire to address the state of the food industry and pork production. With no prior farming experience, the founders embraced a blend of ancient practices and modern innovations to create a new standard of humane farming. Located at 1000' elevation on the slopes of Haleakala on Maui, the farm enjoys a unique micro-climate ideal for growing fruits and vegetables and raising livestock.

Practices

The farm employs rotational grazing with minimal animal density to ensure the land is never overused. Pigs are raised in portable, well-ventilated shelters that are regularly rotated to fresh pastures. The animals enjoy a diet rich in high-nutrient grasses, canoe plants like 'ulu, uala, kalo, and sweet apple bananas, as well as macadamia and pili nuts, malabar chestnuts, and occasional beer. Free-range hens follow the pigs, providing organic eggs and nitrogen-fixing manure. The farm avoids the use of vaccinations, antibiotics, and growth hormones, focusing instead on the natural, slow growth of heritage breeds.

The Rest

The farm's philosophy emphasizes the humane treatment of animals, with a focus on their happiness and well-being. Pigs receive massages, belly rubs, and playtime, and have access to private baths and toys. The farm dog, Moose, adds to the farm's charm by visiting with the birds and pigs. The farm's commitment to animal welfare and land stewardship is evident in every aspect of their operations, from the custom-designed shelters to the nutrient-rich diets and rotational grazing practices.
