Facts
Founded 1867
Background

The Thorstein Veblen Farmstead National Historic Landmark, one of only two farms in Minnesota with this designation, stands as a testament to the ingenuity and hard work of Norwegian immigrants Thomas and Kari Veblen. Their son, Thorstein Veblen, gained recognition with his book 'The Theory of the Leisure Class' in 1899. The farm honors Veblen's accomplishments as a world-renowned economist, author, and social critic. Visitors can experience the home where Veblen grew up and gain insight into how his childhood on a late 19th-century immigrant farm shaped his economic and social theories.

Practices

Flowers are grown without harmful pesticides or chemical fertilizers, using green manure crops and farm-made compost to nourish the soil. This method ensures that the flowers are safer for handlers and the environment. The farm's guiding principles are local, seasonal, and sustainable, ensuring that the flowers are not only beautiful and fragrant but also pesticide-free.

Of note

The farm offers a unique venue for weddings, reunions, and graduation parties, providing a historic and culturally significant backdrop for special events. Guests can also book stays at the farm through Airbnb, where they can enjoy a true Norwegian hygge experience with organic breakfasts and homemade treats. Tours of the Landmark are available by appointment, offering visitors a chance to learn about the Veblen family and the farm's historical significance. Seasonal bouquet subscriptions and custom designed arrangements are available for delivery within a 20-mile radius of Nerstrand, Minnesota.
