About the Farm

Background

Located in the historic town of Hubbardton, VT, this small farm has carved out a niche by focusing on heirloom produce and heritage breed livestock. The farm is a family endeavor, with Janis, a passionate chef, leading the farming operations and culinary creations alongside her husband Jason, who assists with maintenance and other farm needs. Their children, though pursuing their own paths, contribute in various ways, from managing markets to creating their own products.

Practices

The farm employs no-till methods, fostering biologically active soil that sequesters carbon. Their approach is rooted in organic and permaculture principles, avoiding chemical pesticides, artificial fertilizers, GMOs, and hybrids. Heritage breed animals, including Belted Galloway & White British cattle, Leicester Longwool sheep, Mangalitsa and Ossabaw pigs, and heritage laying hens, are humanely raised, free to graze, and fed organic hay in winter. The pigs assist in clearing pastures and forest lines, while the poultry is supplemented with corn-free, non-GMO feeds.

The Rest

The farm also offers a range of specialty foods crafted in-house, such as pickles, jams, apple butters, bakery items, and picnic lunches. Janis and Jason aim to educate the community on the taste and value of high-quality, small-farm food, challenging the dominance of large-scale agriculture. Their youngest, Grady, has his own corner in the farm stand, featuring his homemade granola and summer breakfast sandwiches. The farmstand cafe and market also provide gourmet foods that highlight seasonal ingredients from their fields and other local Vermont farms.
