About the Farm
Background
Founded in 1980, Frey Vineyards is the oldest and largest purely organic winery in the United States. It holds the distinction of being the first in the country to produce biodynamic wines. Located on the slopes of the Redwood Valley AVA in Mendocino County, California, the winery has been a pioneer in organic winemaking standards. Over the years, it has garnered accolades such as the 'California Organic Winery of the Year' at the 2022 New York International Wine Competition.
Practices
All grapes for the organic wines are grown in accordance with California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) standards, while the estate-bottled biodynamic wines adhere to the Demeter Association's rigorous certification. The winery employs innovative winemaking techniques to produce wines without added sulfites, allowing the true flavors of the grapes to shine. The farm also practices regenerative agriculture, focusing on carbon sequestration, soil health, and reducing CO2 emissions. Additionally, the winery maintains nearly 1,000 acres of wildlife corridors to preserve native habitats and encourage ecological balance.
The Rest
Frey Vineyards is committed to producing wines that are gluten-free, allergy-friendly, vegan, and non-GMO. The winery has played a significant role in making Mendocino County the first jurisdiction in the U.S. to ban the cultivation of genetically modified organisms. Their wines have received high ratings from Wine Enthusiast, including 91 points and an 'Editors Choice' for one of their no-sulfite-added wines.
