About the Farm

Background

Since 2013, FoodChain has transformed an abandoned bread factory into Kentucky's pioneering indoor aquaponics farm. They have been forging links between community and fresh food since 2011, focusing on education and demonstration of sustainable food systems. Known for their impactful community programs, they have served meals and provided food literacy education to empower the local community.

Practices

The farm employs a deep-water recirculating aquaponics system, combining aquaculture and hydroponics. With 7,000 gallons of water, 500 tilapia, and thousands of plants, the system uses fish waste to nourish plants, which in turn filter the water for the fish. This method eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers and uses 90% less water than traditional agriculture, showcasing a highly efficient and sustainable approach to food production.

The Rest

FoodChain offers public tours of their aquaponics system and engages the community through various programs, including the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program, providing free meals for youth. They also focus on food literacy education, teaching food skills, culture, and global food systems. Their efforts are supported by numerous local sponsors and partners, contributing to their mission of increasing access to locally sourced, fresh food.
