About the Farm
Background
The Flying B Bar Ranch is one of the original homestead ranches of Southern Oregon, homesteaded by William McMullin in the 1860s. Initially focused on cattle farming, the ranch was purchased from the original family in the late 1940s and continued cattle production through the 1950s. As cattle production value decreased in the 1960s, the ranch diversified its operations. By the mid-1990s, under the Bixby family, the ranch began growing roses, boasting over 1500 rose bushes by 1999. Today, the ranch has over 3500 garden-style rose bushes, producing over 500,000 flowers annually, making it the dominant source of freeze-dried garden roses in the United States. The ranch has also resumed livestock production, including sheep, cattle, alpacas, and a goat.
Practices
The farm employs cyclic usage to enhance its sustainable farming practices. Livestock manure is processed and cycled into fertilizer for the roses, while rose clippings, leaves, weeds, and lawn clippings are fed to the livestock. This interconnected approach ensures that resources are reused efficiently, benefiting both the plants and animals on the farm.
The Rest
The farm shop offers a variety of products, including fresh and preserved flowers, meat, and fiber products. The ranch also produces naturally grown vegetables and fruit, along with grass and oat hay. Additionally, the owners are developing a line of natural fungus fiber dye products.
