About the Farm
Background
The CSA is part of a growing movement that began in Japan in the 1960s and was introduced to the U.S. in the 1980s. It has become a popular model for supporting local agriculture, with over 3,000 CSAs in the U.S. and more than 100 in New York City alone. The CSA is committed to making fresh produce accessible to everyone, offering various payment plans and accepting SNAP benefits.
Practices
The CSA follows organic farming practices, ensuring that members receive fresh, nutritious vegetables that are in season and at the peak of their flavor. The model supports local agriculture by providing farmers with upfront financial support and a secure income, which helps mitigate the risks of farming. Members share in both the risks and benefits of farming, fostering a deeper connection between the farmer and the consumer.
The Rest
Distribution takes place every Thursday from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM at Hebron SDA Church in Brooklyn, NY. Members are required to pick up their shares during designated times, and any unclaimed food is donated to the church's food pantry and soup kitchen. The CSA is a member-run volunteer organization, and volunteers are essential for smooth operations. Members receive a weekly newsletter with tips on preserving and preparing their shares.
