About the Farm
Background
Founded in 1955, agriculture was a key component of Blue Mountain Academy's school program. The farm operated until the mid-90s when it shut down due to financial difficulties. In 2012, the school board voted to restart the agriculture program, beginning with a couple of greenhouses and a small vegetable garden. The program has since expanded to include laying hens, approximately 3 acres of vegetable gardens, berries, herbs, orchards, bees, hay, and grain crops. In 2017, a portion of the farm became USDA Certified Organic, with the remaining fields certified in 2019.
Practices
The farm uses non-GMO seeds and avoids chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides. It focuses on organic farming methods and provides fresh produce and grains to the cafeteria and customers. The agricultural program is an integral part of the school's Vocational Education Program during the school year, and offers work opportunities for students during the summer.
The Rest
The farm offers CSA boxes through their Harvie website, providing flexibility with weekly or biweekly shares. They also have a Farm Stand for one-time share purchases. The farm aims to help others buy affordable, organic produce and teaches students how to live off the land.
