About the Farm
Background
Bar OA Flower Farm was founded in 2017 as an urban micro flower farm in Edmonton's Northeast community of Beacon Heights. The farm was born out of a desire to produce local, fresh, seasonally-inspired cut flowers of the highest quality. As the farm grew, they outgrew their land and partnered with Andrew, a fellow farmer with spare land near Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The name 'Bar OA' comes from Bryanna's grandfather, Arthur 'Buck' Pierce, a pioneer in sustainable farming.
Practices
The farm operates with a strong commitment to sustainability, aiming to be almost plastic-free by exploring alternatives to plastic in their processes. They trial peat-moss free seedling mediums and continuously explore new ways to utilize farm waste to create new products and reduce their overall footprint. Small-scale farming allows them to trial dozens of unique flower varieties and showcase their farming philosophy at a manageable scale.
The Rest
The farm hosts workshops with the Whitemud Equine Learning Association Center and other community organizations to positively impact the community. They offer a CSA program for flowers, allowing customers to purchase flowers before the growing season begins, which helps in better planning and providing the freshest blooms. Seasonal workshops and farm tours are also offered, blending hands-on skills with deeper knowledge. Bryanna Yung, co-founder, has an extensive background in agriculture and floral design, while her husband Gary provides essential support and enjoys sharing the farm's story with visitors.
