About the Farm
Background
Located in Richmond, VA, the farm has become known for its unique Chickasaw blackberries, a variety that was never commercially expanded due to its thorny canes and large fruits. Farmer Chuck connected with breeders through the North American Raspberry and Blackberry Association to propagate this variety, making the farm one of the few places where these berries are grown. The farm also hosts a CSA and a farmer's market-style stand every Wednesday from May to September.
Practices
The farm employs a hands-on approach to berry cultivation, focusing on varieties like Chickasaw blackberries for their exceptional size and flavor. Educational tours are a staple, teaching young visitors about berry harvesting and the origins of their food. The Hanover Master Gardeners participate in weekly gleaning days, picking berries to donate to community food banks and pantries, ensuring that even the most tender fruits like raspberries are shared with those in need.
The Rest
The farm is a hive of activity during the summer, with over 50 harvesters, many experiencing their first job, and educational tours for students from the Advanced Career Education Center at Hermitage. These tours cover various topics, from landscape design to culinary arts. The farm also offers recipes and cooking tips through social media, engaging with the community and promoting healthy, delicious fruit consumption.
